Students take advantage of IPASS at LCC

Students at Laredo Community College are using IPASS to succeed in their studies and to stay on the path to a brighter future.

In September LCC launched the Instructors Promoting Academic Student Success program, or IPASS, a unique tutoring initiative led by college faculty and administrative staff with degrees, specialties or expertise in all instructional areas.

During the fall semester, more than 700 students at both main and south campuses were among the first to take advantage of this free tutoring service.

This spring, nearly 500 students had sought assistance from IPASS by mid-term, including 248 students at main campus and 224 at south campus, Cynthia Capra, student support services counselor, said.

“For years students have benefited from the peer-to-peer and computer-assisted tutoring services offered in the learning center at LCC,” Capra said.  “It’s encouraging to know that more than 1,000 students have used the IPASS since its short inception as an additional avenue to seek instructional guidance outside of the classroom.”

Equally impressive is the commitment IPASS has received from college faculty members who volunteer one hour a week to help students with questions in their field of study.

When the program was launched, college officials hoped that at least 40 faculty members would sign up for the volunteer project.

Instead, the program received an overwhelming support from 80 volunteers last term.

The list of participating faculty members continued to grow this spring.

“Laredo Community College  appreciates the response the IPASS program has received from caring and gifted instructors who are committed to helping students succeed and realize their educational goals” Capra said.

With IPASS, LCC students are able to get assistance with their classes, whether completing an assignment, preparing for a test, working math problems or writing an essay or research paper.

IPASS is available to any full-time or part-time student at either campus with a valid LCC ID card.

Tutors are available during the day and in the evenings for the benefit and convenience of students.

Among the subjects covered by IPASS are English, reading, chemistry, psychology, math, nursing, social work, history, computer information systems, child development, criminal justice, speech and many more.

For more information, call the learning center at 721-5230 at main campus or 794-4342 at the south campus.

Registration for summer session 1 and 2 at LCC main and south is under way via the On Line Enrollment (OLÉ) system at http://ole.laredo.edu from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m.
