
Laredo Community College formally recognized recipients of the General Educational Development (GED) Diploma during the 37th annual GED Commencement on Friday, May 12 in the Maravillo Gymnasium.
Family and friends of the graduates, as well as the public, attended the traditional ceremony.
Hosted by the LCC Adult Education Program Tri-County Co-op for Webb, Zapata and Jim Hogg counties, 94 individuals were conferred diplomas. Approximately 263 persons who passed all portions of the GED exam between May 2005 and April 2006 were eligible to participate in the traditional ceremony.
Commencement addresses were provided by U.S. Congressman Henry Cuellar and May 2006 GED graduate Lorenza Reyes.
A highlight of the ceremony was the presentation of 6 scholarships, totaling $3,500, to deserving graduates who plan to launch their college education at LCC this fall. This included the presentation of the LCC GED Merit Scholarships to Catherine Castañeda, Ivonne Garcia and Rosenda Molina. Also awarded were scholarships from the LCC Citizens Advisory Committee to Jessica Ann Franco and Magdalena Suarez and from Sony Magnetic Products to Luis E. Silva.
