LCC to offer Reading Club Challenge

Membership has its privileges.

And at the Laredo Community College libraries, membership to the 2006 Summer Reading Club Challenge will offer preschool and elementary school students valuable opportunities to expand their reading skills and win exciting prizes.

The Zaffirini Library at LCC South is encouraging preschoolers and elementary school children to join its first Summer Reading Club, which begins June 1 and ends on July 10.  Registration forms are available at the Zaffirini Library and the Yeary Library on the LCC main campus.

The club is being created to reward students for their independent summer reading, Iris Puentes from the south campus library said.

“Studies show that students who read during the summer return to school excited and ready to learn and achieve higher reading levels,” Puentes said.  “Students and children are encouraged to take advantage of all the great resources available at the libraries at LCC and throughout the community.”

For preschoolers, books read to them by a parent or with help from a parent qualify.

All students who read 10 books between June 1 and July 10 will receive a fun reward, Puentes said.  The rewards are courtesy of Chili’s, Krispy Kreme, Movies 12, Chik-fil-a, Cici’s Pizza and Golden Corral.

At the program’s conclusion, the top 3 readers will receive special prizes courtesy of B. Dalton Bookstore.

Event organizers added that students can read their own books or books from any library.

Parents also can purchase a community card at the Zaffirini or Yeary libraries, which allows the card holder to check out three books at a time.  The cost is $15, and parents must accompany children on visits to the college libraries.

For more information, call Puentes at 794-4275 or visit the Zaffirini Library.
