For parents with a young scientist in their family, Laredo Community College is offering a fun way to explore the fascinating world of environmental science.
Organizers of the LCC Lamar Bruni Vergara Environmental Science Center Summer Camp encourage parents to sign up their children for an exciting and educational experience in ecological science.
“Summer camp at Laredo Community College’s environmental science center is a great opportunity for children and teenagers to discover an appreciation for the environment and nature’s living creatures through exciting and challenging activities geared for specific age groups,” director Tom Miller said.
Eight camp sessions are planned, including one-week, half-day sessions for ages 4 to 8 and full-day, one-week sessions for ages 9 to 15.
Camp sessions for tots, ages 4-6, and one for junior campers, ages 6-8, will be from Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Daycare is available until 4:30 p.m. for an additional charge.
Camp sessions for ages 9 to 11 and ages 12 to 15 will be from Monday through Thursday from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Depending on their ages, campers will be treated to a fun-filled learning experience, including nature hikes, hands-on activities creating plaster animal tracks, observations of animals and plants in natural settings, scientific collections and much more.
An advanced camp for ages 12 to 15, meeting July 24-28, will include nature trail hikes, a study of aquatic biology, water skills, swimming, snorkeling, introduction to scuba diving, and kayaking or canoeing, among other activities.
All campers receive an award at the completion of each camp session. Lunch also is provided.
The LBVESC Summer Camp 2006 sessions are on June 26-30 for ages 4 to 6; on June 5-9, June 19-23 and July 17-21 for ages 6 to 8; on June 12-16 and July 10-14 for ages 9 to 11; on June 26-30 for ages 12 to 14 (specialty); and on July 24-28 for ages 12 to 15 (advanced).
The camp fee for ages 4 to 6 and for ages 6 to 8 is $100. The camp for ages 9 to 11 is $150, while the specialty camp for ages 12-14 is $160. The advanced camp for ages 12-15 is $175.
All campers must be covered by their family’s medical insurance in case of illness or injury while in camp.
