LCC Dance Concert on tap for Sunday

A visual feast will be enjoyed by all who attend the fall 2006 Dance Concert of Laredo Community College on Sunday, Nov. 5.

Sponsored by the LCC Music and Dance Department and the City of Laredo, the dance extravaganza will begin at 3 p.m. in the Guadalupe and Lilia Martinez Fine Arts Center theater.  Doors open at 2:30 p.m.  Admission to this culturally eclectic concert is free and open to the public.

A potpourri of dances from various genres and cultures will come alive on the stage with the presence of six student performance ensembles, including the Dance Theatre, the Ballet Folklorico, the Flamenco Company, the combined Lyric Ballet and Jazz Ensemble and the college’s newest dance performance ensemble, the Dance Composition class.  The concert also will include a special guest performance by Grupo Ceres of Nuevo Laredo.

The LCC Ballet Folklorico, led by adjunct dance instructor/choreographer Alicia V. McKinnis, will offer a cultural perspective on the tropical merengue moves of Veracruz and Mexico’s popular charreada.

McKinnis also directs the LCC Flamenco Company, a troupe of dancers dedicated to promoting traditional and modern styles of dance from Spain.  The dancers will perform the gypsy-style garrotin and the zarzuela, which is a type of Spanish musical comedy.

The Lyric Ballet and Jazz Ensemble will spice up the stage with an array of selections, including traditional and contemporary jazz.

Under the direction of adjunct instructor/choreographer Sandra Y. Harsa, the combined groups will perform to the music of Shakira, Daft Punk and Beyoncé.

The mystique steps of modern dance will be presented on the stage by the LCC Dance Theatre, directed by dance instructor/choreographer Danuta U. Gazdyszyn.

The Dance Theatre will perform music to the beat of Petey Pablo, The Beatles and Joe Cocker.

Other highlights include performances choreographed by LCC dance student Ani Vera, including the hip-hop piece “Show Me the Money” and the jazz piece “Love” by Keiysha Cole.  Vera is a talented student dancer who recently received the Blanche Flores Leyendecker scholarship.

The Dance Composition class, which was launched this fall, will perform the “Vivaldi Dialogues,” a piece choreographed by the students.

Grupo Ceres will dance a modern piece, entitled “Mary en Azul.”  The piece is choreographed by Laura Rocha.
