Arts buzz continues at LCC with guitar recital

 

The arts are alive at Laredo Community College, which is playing host to an array of performances and other cultural activities this week.

GUITAR RECITAL

      Guitars are strumming on Wednesday, Nov 15 when LCC student guitarists are featured in a recital at 7:30 p.m. in the Martinez Fine Arts Center theater.  Admission to this performance also is free to the public.

      The Guitar Student Recital will feature solo and ensemble performances by students of Dr. Cain Budds.  The program will feature music various composers, including Ferdinado Carrulli, Fernando Sor, J.S. Bach, Victor Herbert and more.

MUSIC STUDENT RECITAL

      Music for the clarinet, piano, saxophone, marimba and more will be showcased by talented LCC music students on Thursday, Nov. 16 at 7:30 p.m. in the Martinez Fine Arts Center theater.  Admission is free to the public.

      An extravaganza of voice and musical instrumentation will be featured.  The program includes works by Augustin Barrios, Georges Bizet, Frederic Chopin and W.A. Mozart, among others.

                                                                        LCC ART SHOW

      Michelle Martin, a “lifelong people-watching enthusiast,” will offer a unique observation of society through her artistic talents during the opening of a new art show at LCC Thursday, Nov. 16.

      Art lovers are invited to an opening reception for Martin’s “Social Observation” from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. at the LCC Art Teaching Gallery.  Admission is free of charge.  Refreshments will be served.

      An associate professor of printmaking at the University of Tulsa in Tulsa, Okla., Martin bases her work on her fascination with social situations and how behavior changes are dictated by the context, environment and people involved.

      An active artist of print media and drawing, Martin has exhibited her work in more than 80 national and international exhibitions since 1995.  She also has won numerous awards.

MASTER DANCE CLASS

      Former LCC dance alum David Arevalo, who now is a professional dancer with the Houston Metropolitan Dance Company, returns to his hometown college to offer a master class on contemporary jazz dance Friday, Nov. 17.

      Sponsored by the LCC Performing Arts Department, the master class will be led by Arevalo from 6 to 8:30 p.m. in the Martinez Fine Arts Center, room 104.  Admission is free and open to intermediate and advanced dance students.  Due to limited space, students must RSVP by calling 721-5330.

      The Laredo native began classical ballet training at the VMT School of Communications and Fine Arts at age 16.  After high school, he began his college studies at LCC where he took ballet and jazz classes. 

      After LCC, Arevalo took some classes at the University of the Incarnate Word in San Antonio and then transferred to Sam Houston State University in Huntsville, where he obtained a BFA in dance and a minor in Spanish.  He now resides in Houston, where he dances  with  the  HMDC  and  will be appear next month in the company’s concert, Quirky Works

LPO CONCERT

      The weeklong slate of cultural events at LCC concludes with a concert featuring the Laredo Philharmonic Orchestra on Sunday, Nov. 19.

      “Of Life and Death,” the second concert of the 27th season of the LPO, will begin at 4 p.m. in the Martinez Fine Arts Center theater.

  Under the baton of maestro Brendan Townsend, the Laredo Philharmonic Orchestra will perform music from three master composers, including Rapture by American composer Christopher Rouse, Four Last Songs TrV 296 by Richard Strauss and Symphony No. 1 in C minor by Johannes Brahms.  The latter two are noted German Romantic composers.

The concert will feature guest soloist Suzanne Ramo, a noted soprano who has performed with the San Francisco Opera, the City Opera of the Quad Cities, the Tulsa Opera and the Amarillo Opera, among others. 

  Admission is free and open to LCC and TAMIU students with a valid student ID card.

Tickets are $25 for adults and $17 for adult seniors. Tickets may be purchased at IBC Bank (Plantation/Mall del Norte 1), Wells Fargo downtown, and at the business offices of LCC and TAMIU.  Tickets also will be sold at the door on the day of the concert.
