The Palomino men's tennis team at Laredo Community College is once again ranked first in the fall 2006 rankings of the National Junior College Athletic Association Men's Tennis Division.
LCC's placement on the top of the FILA Collegiate Tennis Rankings was released recently by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association, which serves as the governing body of collegiate tennis.
This is the third year in a row that the Palominos achieve this noted distinction, which is decided through votes by a five-member committee of coaches.
The fall rankings are based on the very short pre-season fall schedule, LCC Palomino head coach Jaime Donjuan said.
The team seemed to do well despite some player setbacks this fall.
“We had one player out due to knee surgery and another who required surgery for an appendicitis that developed just two days after arriving to Laredo from Spain,” Donjuan said.
“Fortunately, we have a dedicated group of players who joined forces and stepped it up a notch to help us retain our No. 1 ranking,” Donjuan added.
Luckily, the two players out on medical leave are back in top form on the courts and Donjuan plans to add two members to the team in January.
“It appears that Laredo Community College has another top notch team ready to capture the national title again in 2007,” Donjuan said.
The fall 2006 LCC tennis roster includes sophomores Jose Pablo Arizpe of Mexico City and Gwen Corches of Germany, and three freshmen from France, including Laurant Croize, Arnaud Guillemard and Georgie Perez. Also on the roster are Francisco Segura of Spain and Diego Troiano of Brazil.
