A colorful showcase of dances from Mexico, Spain and other Latin American cultures will be celebrated at Laredo Community College in a special dance concert and scholarship fundraiser on Sunday, Dec. 3.
LCC, in collaboration with the Vidal M. Treviño School of Communications and Fine Arts, will host the second annual Danzas Hispanas (Hispanic Dances) Concert, featuring an array of high school and college dance performance ensembles.
The event begins at 3 p.m. in the Guadalupe and Lilia Martinez Fine Arts Center theater. Admission is $5 per person with proceeds benefiting scholarships for dance students at LCC.
LCC adjunct dance instructor/event coordinator Alicia McKinnis is excited to organize this major dance festival.
Popular dances from Spain, Mexico, Argentina, Puerto Rico and Veracruz will be featured.
“Laredo Community College is excited to be working collaboratively with the VMT Magnet School to present a top-notch cultural extravaganza of dance, while raising scholarship funds to help college students make their dreams in the performing arts a reality,” McKinnis said.
The concert will feature performances by the LCC Ballet Folklorico, the LCC Flamenco Company and the VMT Ballet Folklorico-Flamenco—all directed and choreographed by McKinnis.
Additionally, some of the music for the dance performances will be performed live by the VMT Camerata Winds, directed by Melissa Hinojosa.
McKinnis said that the dance concert will feature many unique dance styles, including the charreria, merengue, the cha-cha, flamenco, the zarzuela, classical Spanish and the cumbia.
“The concert will feature many recognizable dance forms,” McKinnis said. “But it also will feature dances not common to this region.”
Tickets will be sold at the door beginning at 2 p.m.
