A collection of art jewelry, functional objects and holloware that uses organic qualities, game-like attributes and gender characteristics to convey human relationships and sacred love was unveiled at Laredo Community College on Wednesday, Oct. 11.
Art lovers attended an opening reception for an exhibit entitled “Creating a Myth” from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. at the LCC Art Teaching Gallery.
The work is by art metals instructor David Bausman, who joined LCC this fall.
Bausman said that his works convey a spiritual awareness on a physical and psychological level.
“Since the body has been perceived as a vessel throughout history, I incorporate hollow forms a majority of the time” Bausman said. “I prefer to work in silver, because of its working characteristics and inert qualities, however, I also use other metals and incorporate stones to represent various metaphysical properties to connect us as humans to the universe.”
He added, “I convey a myth that not only relates us as humans to our natural world, but is also universal to all societies.”
It is Bausman’s opinion that this myth will convey the importance of balance and strengthen relationships on a physical, mental and spiritual level.
Prior to his arrival at LCC, Bausman was a graduate instructor for beginning jewelry/metalsmithing at Texas Tech University.
His work has been exhibited across the country, including Texas, New Mexico, Pennsylvania, Illinois, North Carolina and Oregon.
The exhibit will be on display through Thursday, Nov. 2 during the art gallery hours of operation. For more information, call 721-5224.
