Saxophone master class on tap at LCC

High school and college saxophone students can get some valuable tips to improve their performance skills at Laredo Community College.

The LCC Performing Arts Department and the LCC Music Club will hold two saxophone master classes featuring award-winning alto saxophonist Joe David Compean.

The first class, set for Thursday, Oct. 12 at 2 p.m., will focus on the Texas Music Educators Association (TMEA) All-State Band etudes.

The second class, set for Friday, Oct. 13 at 12 p.m., will emphasize the TMEA All-State Jazz Band etudes.

Both classes will be held in the Guadalupe and Lilia Martinez Fine Arts Center, room 101.

The classes are open to all high school and college saxophone students, especially those preparing to audition for the TMEA All-State Band.

To sign up for the classes, call Jose Compean at 721-5304.

Compean, who started playing the saxophone at a young age, was ranked as the top alto saxophonist in the Texas All-State Band three years in a row.

After receiving the outstanding soloist award at the Texas State Solo and Ensemble Contest four consecutive years, Compean continued his musical endeavors at the University of Texas at Austin.

While at UT-Austin, he continued to place in several competitions and was hired by Disney to perform in the All-Star College Show Band.

Compean holds a bachelor’s degree in music education, a master’s degree in performance, and a doctorate of musical arts (ABD).

In addition to his extensive performing, Compean has directed U.I.L. award-winning programs and continues to oversee a saxophone studio in Central Texas.
