
Gilbert
and Sullivan’s classic comic opera “The Gondoliers or The King of Barataria”
comes to life on the Laredo Community College stage Thursday, Oct. 26.
Presented by the LCC Opera Workshop in conjunction with the LCC Performing Arts Department, the classic opera will be shown at the Guadalupe and Lilia Martinez Fine Arts Center theater at 7:30 p.m. from Oct. 26 to 28.
A special showing for students from area school districts will be offered on Wednesday, Oct. 25 at 9 a.m.
Admission for the evening performances is $5/person, while admission for the morning performance for school children is $3.
The opera focuses on two gondolieri, Marco and Giuseppe, who love two pretty Venetian contadine, Gianetta and Tessa.
However, one of the gondoliers was switched at birth and, as it turns out, is actually the heir to the throne of Barataria and pledged as an infant to the noble Casilda.
But, Casilda is in love with Luiz, attendant and private drummer to her father and mother, the Duke and Duchess of Plaza-Toro.
Who is the real king? Who will marry whom?

John Maxstadt stars as Giuseppi and Daniel Cantu as Marco. Other cast members include Ana Uribe as Gianetta, Hacel Arias as Tessa, Stephen Miller as the Duke, Stephanie Solis as the Duchess, Erica Salinas as Casilda, Josue Perez as Luiz and Jose Arbol de Congrejo as Don Alhambra.
The production is under the direction of Dr. Joseph C. Crabtree.
