Building trade classes part of Second Start Semester

The first step to becoming a carpenter or an electrician is possible to achieve during the Second Start Semester at Laredo Community College.

The class schedule features an array of full-credit academic and technical courses students may complete in just eight weeks.  Classes began Monday, Oct. 23.

Among the offerings available from the Building Trades Department are Introduction to Carpentry (CRPT 1329M90) and National Electrical Code 1 (ELPT 1325M90).

The carpentry course offers an introduction to the carpentry trade, including safety, tools, equipment, terminology and methods.

Students will learn how to work under established safety guidelines, recognize and explain the use of tools and equipment, and identify and describe fasteners and adhesives.

They also will become familiar with building material terms used by carpenters, handling and storage procedures, use and care of tools and equipment, and mathematical computations used by the carpenter.

The carpentry course meets Mondays and Wednesdays, Oct. 23 through Dec. 13, from 8:30 to 11:50 a.m. at the main campus.

The electrical technology course is an introduction study of the National Electrical Code (NEC) for those employed in fields requiring knowledge of the code.

Learning will focus on wiring design, protection, methods and materials, as well as equipment for general use and basic calculations.

Students will learn how to locate and interpret the sections in the NEC that pertain to electrical installations and calculate the size of conductors, boxes, raceways and overcurrent protective devices for branch circuits supplying equipment, among other topics.

The NEC 1 course will meet on Saturdays, Oct. 28 through Dec. 9, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on the main campus.
