Blind Reign rocks the new term at LCC

Students at Laredo Community College get to enjoy the start of a new term with rock music and more, including mini job fairs and a student art show this week.

Blind Reign, recently named “Laredo’s Best Band” in a Laredo Morning Times-sponsored contest, is helping get the fall 2006 semester off to a rousing start, LCC Student Activities Director Priscilla Medina said.

“LCC students are looking forward to enjoying the rock concert with Blind Reign,” Medina said.

Blind Reign was in concert at LCC’s main campus on Tuesday, Sept. 5 at 12 p.m. in the Kazen College Center.

The band also performs at LCC South on Wednesday, Sept. 6 at 12 p.m. in the Billy Hall Student Center.

Both concert performances are free and open to LCC students and the public.

The seven-year-old local rock band consists of Tony Shepherd (vocals/bass), Ernesto Maciel (guitars/vocals) and LCC alum Alex Cavazos (drums).  The group has had the opportunity to open for noted bands, including Foreigner, Jefferson Starship, Frankie Goes to Hollywood and Blue Oyster Cult, among others.

The college also will offer something for job seekers to check out.

An employment recruiter from Joy Dollar Store will be at the Kazen College Center lobby on Wednesday, Sept. 6 to meet with interested students from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

An employment recruiter from the Olive Garden Restaurant also was on campus Monday.

The weeklong slate of student activities will end with an artistic flair on Thursday, Sept. 7 with a reception for the LCC Art Student Semi-Annual Exhibition.

The LCC Art Department will host the reception from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. at the LCC Art Teaching Gallery to honor student artists whose works were selected for inclusion in the art show.  Admission to the reception is free and open to students and the public.

The exhibition will feature a wide spectrum of art created by LCC students enrolled in spring and summer classes, including drawings, high-tech art created by design communication students, oil paintings, watercolor, printmaking, photography, ceramics, metals and jewelry making.

The show remains on display through Sept. 28.
