
Richard Renner, a veteran college educator with more than 30 years’ experience, is the new dean of arts and sciences at Laredo Community College.
A
member of the LCC family since 1977, Renner was the chairperson of the Science
Department for seven years prior to his new role, which he assumed this fall.
Renner, who reports directly to Associate Vice President for Instruction Dr. Nora R. Garza, provides leadership and coordination to the college’s instructional departments.
Renner is providing administration support to instructional departments to ensure that students are able to meet their educational goals.
As dean of arts and sciences, Renner oversees nine instructional departments, including art, English, foreign languages, kinesiology, mathematics, performing arts, reading and communication studies, natural and physical science, and social and behavioral sciences. Also included are the Lamar Bruni Vergara Environmental Science Center and the Honors Program.
Renner began his tenure at LCC as an instructor of biology in 1977 until 1999, when he was selected the chair of the Science Department.
Prior to LCC, he was an assistant professor of biology at Macon Junior College (MJC) in Macon, Ga. from 1968 to 1977. He also served as a teacher assistant in botany from 1966 to 1968 at Washington University in St. Louis, Mo.
Renner holds a Master of Arts in Botany from Washington University, a Bachelor of Arts in Botany from the University of Wyoming in Laramie, Wyo., and an Associate in Arts from Casper Community College in Casper, Wyo.
Renner is a 2002 Teaching Excellence Award recipient recognized by the National Institute for Staff and Organizational Development of the University of Texas at Austin. He also participated in a National Science Foundation molecular biology workshop at the University of Wisconsin in 1995.
His publications include a Lab Manual for Biology 101-102 courses at MJC and a Chemistry Study Guide for biology students at LCC.
At LCC, he served as a chairperson of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools accreditation self study committee in 1987, as campus assembly president from 1987 to 1990 and as faculty senate president from 1994 to 1995.
