Men's tennis team starts national tourney Tuesday; Gwen Corches earns award

 

PLANO – The Laredo Community College Palomino men's tennis team received byes for the first round of action at the National Junior College Athletic Association tournament, which began on Monday, May 14 at Collin County Community College.

 Also, LCC standout Gwen Corches of Germany was awarded the "Player to Watch" award during Sunday's tournament banquet.

 With the byes, the seeded LCC tennis players automatically advance to the second round of action at the national tournament on Tuesday, May 15.

 The Palominos will see action in singles in the following flights: 1- Corches; 2- Jose Pablo Arizpe; 3- Laurent Croize; 4- Francisco Segura; 5- Diego Troiano; and 6- Georgie Perez.  In doubles, the Palominos are seeded in the following flights: 1- Croize/Segura; 2- Corches/Arizpe; and 3- Troiano/Diego Abreu.  The Palominos in the top three single flights are sophomores.  The rest are freshmen.

LCC head tennis coach Jaime Donjuan said that his team is ready for action on Tuesday and is proud of the honor that Corches garnered.

"The award that Gwen Corches received is honoring him for achieving an excellent season on the tennis court, and recognizes him as the player to keep all eyes on for he is destined to achieve greater things in his future tennis career," Donjuan explained.

The award also recognizes Corches for his sportsmanship and character.

     The Palominos are defending their national title for the third consecutive year at the NJCAA tournament, which runs through Friday, May 18.
