LCC benches offer special way to celebrate family occasions

Birthdays are traditionally celebrated with cake, balloons and piñatas.

But the family of Laredoan Olga G. Haynes decided to celebrate her birthday in a unique way.

They chose to dedicate a bench on the Laredo Community College Fort McIntosh Campus in honor of Olga Haynes and her late husband, Jorge B. Haynes.      College administrators and staff, and members of the Haynes family, some who came from as far away as California, were on hand to witness as the J.J. Haynes family dedicated in honor of their loved ones a bench located around the center courtyard of the historic campus.

The Campus Bench Project, which was initiated in 2004 by the L.C.C. Education Foundation, offers a special way for members of the community to have a bench placed at the Fort McIntosh or South Campuses in memory or honor of a loved one.

“The L.C.C. Education Foundation has dedicated 30 benches to date,” said LCC community relations and special projects director Millie Slaughter. “This is the first time that a bench is dedicated to celebrate a person’s birthday.  Laredo Community College is pleased to offer this initiative as a creative way to commemorate family occasions.”

The benches, which are made of granite, marble and terrazzo, feature an inscription denoting a name in memory or honor of an individual.

The foundation is interested in acquiring at least 30 more benches, which are enjoyed by students, faculty and staff at both campuses.

Persons who are interested in learning more about the Campus Bench Project may contact Slaughter at 721-5812.

Haynes. Seated is Olga G. Haynes, whose birthday was commemorated by her family with the dedication of the campus bench.
