Beethoven, West Side Story music to be played Thursday
The sounds of classical music will fill the air when the Laredo Community College Chamber Music Ensemble presents its annual fall recital on Thursday, Nov. 5 at 7:30 p.m. in the Guadalupe and Lilia Martinez Fine Arts Center theater.
Admission is free and open to the public.
Dr. Joe Compeán, director and conductor for the LCC Chamber Music Ensemble, said that the band’s concert will be an exciting mix of songs from the 19th and 20th centuries.
The chamber music recital will focus on music from Ludwig von Beethoven, Antonio Vivaldi, Sonny Rollins and Franz Schubert.
More than a dozen Trautmann Middle School band members will join LCC’s Jazz Combo and Brass Ensemble as they showcase their musical talents under the direction of Jorge Luis Garcia.
Compeán said the concert will be a culmination of countless hours of practice from LCC students.
“As a music educator, I believe it is imperative that our students experience a professional setting in all aspects of their training,” Compeán added. “I am elated to have the opportunity to work with musically gifted students.”
According to Compeán, chamber music is typically played by a small number of performers with one performer to a part or instrument.
The program will begin with “Concerto in A minor for Two Violins and Basso Continuo” written by Vivaldi and “Sonate en Fa Pour Deux Saxophones de Méme Tonalité” by J.M. Leclair.
The LCC Brass Ensemble will perform “Honor and Arms” by G. Handel, and “The Percy Grainger Suite” and “The West Side Story Suite.”
The LCC Jazz Combo ensemble will conclude the performance with “Night in Tunisia” by Dizzy Gillespie, Carlos Jobim’s “The Girl from Ipanema” and “Tenor Madness” written by Rollins.
