LCC baseball ready for ‘good’ season

Palominos launch season at home versus Ranger College Friday

The future looks bright for the Palomino baseball team of Laredo Community College as it hosts a two-day home stand battle against Ranger College, beginning on Friday, Jan. 29 at 12 p.m. at the Dr. Crispin Sanchez Baseball Field on the north side of the Fort McIntosh Campus.

To celebrate the new season, LCC President Dr. Juan L. Maldonado has been invited to throw the ceremonial first pitch at 11:50 a.m.

After Friday’s doubleheader, the Palominos tangle once again with Ranger in another doubleheader on Saturday, Jan. 30 at 12 p.m.  Admission to the local games is $2 per adult, $1 for children and free with an LCC student or faculty/staff ID card.

Embarking on his third season as head coach for the Palominos, Eric Gonzalez has a positive outlook on the team’s performance this year.

“It’s looking really good,” Gonzalez said.  “This will be the best team I have coached since I began at LCC.”

Gonzalez said that he has several pitchers that can throw in the 90 mile per hour range, hitters averaging in the 300s and above.

“We have the pitchers and hitters.  If we can play good defensively, we are going to win a lot of games,” Gonzalez said.

Gonzalez seems to have assembled a well balanced corps of baseball players from the region and around the world.

His roster includes players from Laredo, San Antonio, Corpus Christi, Puerto Rico, Mexico and the Dominican Republic.  The Palominos even have a player, who hails from Kobe, Japan.

“Takahiro Inoue is the Palominos’ first-ever player from Japan,” Gonzalez said.  “He was an exchange student at Brackenridge High School in San Antonio, where we recruited him.”

Gonzalez added that this year’s team is composed of student-athletes who have been working hard in preparation for the season.  And this year’s team possesses a special trait that had been lacking for a while.

“What’s most impressive is the team’s chemistry on and off the field,” Gonzalez said.  “And we’re happy about that because all teams do really well when they have good chemistry.”
