Dances of several genres and cultures will be presented during the Fall 2004 Laredo Community College Dance Concert on Sunday, November 7.
Sponsored by the LCC Music and Dance Department and the City of Laredo, the dance extravaganza will begin at 3 p.m. in the Guadalupe and Lilia Martinez Fine Arts Center theater. Admission to this family-friendly cultural concert is free and open to the public.
The concert will feature a colorful mix of dance styles, presented by five student performance ensembles, including the Dance Theatre, the Ballet Folklorico, the Flamenco Company, the Lyric Ballet and the Jazz Ensemble.
The LCC Ballet Folklorico, led by Adjunct Dance Instructor/Choreographer Alicia V. McKinnis, will offer a cultural perspective on the dance forms relative to the Mexican states of Yucatan and Jalisco.
McKinnis also directs the LCC Flamenco Company, which is a troupe of dancers dedicated to promoting traditional and modern styles of dance from Spain. The dancers will perform traditional folklore, including “Tanquillo de Cadiz” and “Jota Aragonesa.” On the modern side of flamenco, the group will perform a dance entitled “The Power of a Woman’s Allure.”
The graceful rhythms of classical music will be brought to life by the LCC Lyric Ballet, while the Jazz Ensemble will spice up the stage with the sultry sounds of jazz.
Under the direction of Adjunct Instructor/Choreographer Sandra Saucedo, the lyric ballet dancers will perform to the music of master composer Schubert in a dance piece, simply titled “Serenity.”
The jazz ensemble dancers, also led by Saucedo, will perform a jazz adaptation of the Aerosmith song, “Come Together.”
Dance skills are not the only student talent that will be highlighted in the LCC Dance Concert. The choreography talents of students Sarai L. Araiza and Lori M. Martinez will also be featured. The duo will be featured in two dance selections, which they have assembled. This includes the songs, “Amor y la vida sigue” by Nuevas Cruces and “Anatomia.”
The mystique steps of modern dance will be presented on the stage by the LCC Dance Theatre, under the direction of Dance Instructor/Choreographer Danuta U. Gazdyszyn.
