LCC honors students attend national conference

Laredo Community College Honors Program students recently attended the 39th annual conference of the National Collegiate Honors Council in New Orleans, Louisiana.  The conference theme was “Bridging Currents & Cultures.”

Attending the four-day conference were Sophomore Class President Angelica Del Carmen Martinez, Freshmen Class President Clarissa Rendon, Freshmen Class Secretary Christine Cortez, and Honors Program Co-Coordinator José D. Compeán.

“The conference was enlightening and offered an opportunity to network with honors program directors of other colleges.  I truly gained a lifetime of knowledge and will strive to implement the latest trends in Honors Program curricula,” said Compeán.

The students attended many workshops and seminars addressing issues in Honors Programs throughout the United States.  Topics included: “Students in Honors,” “Major Scholarships and Honors Students” and “Beginning in Honors.”

“The NCHC conference allowed us to learn new and exiting ideas on how to bring students in the honors program closer together.  We also had a chance to learn about New Orleans’ diverse culture,” explained Cortez.

Martinez said, “Attending the national conference was an unforgettable experience.  We had an opportunity to learn from and share ideas with fellow NCHC members.  Issues about increasing student participation in the national conference were also discussed.”

Rendon was elated with the experience.  She said, “The NCHC conference in New Orleans was fun and engaging.  We enjoyed the history-filled city and at the same time we received information about other successful honors programs; we learned many new ideas to implement in the LCC program.”

High school seniors and graduating juniors who qualify for the LCC Honors Program may call Compeán or Dr. Jacinto P. Juarez at 721-5956 for more information.

December graduates, who meet eligibility criteria, may be considered for spring 2005 admission to the LCC Honors Program.   Applications for admission to the Honors Program are available on-line on the LCC website at: www.laredo.edu/honors.
