The educational services and features that benefit patrons of the new Senator Judith Zaffirini Library were showcased on Monday, December 13, at Laredo Community College South.
Billed as a Literary Celebration, the event also highlighted the naming of the new library after Dr. Zaffirini.
The library is dedicated to Sen. Zaffirini for her support for public schools, libraries and higher education institutions through her involvement with the Texas Senate.
The celebration included remarks from LCC President Dr. Ramón H. Dovalina, LCC Board President Ramiro V. Martinez and Sen. Zaffirini.
As a token of appreciation, the college presented the Senator with three books on Ralph W. Emerson, Henry D. Thoreau and Walt Whitman. The three literary figures are favorites of Sen. Zaffirini. The gift was presented by Dr. Juan L. Maldonado, vice-president for instruction and student development, and Phil Worley, associate dean of instructional support services.
Library Director Tom LaFleur offered a comprehensive review on how the LCC South library came to fruition—from its beginnings to present day. He noted that staff began planning for the new library immediately after the voting citizens of Laredo approved in 2001 a $50 million bond issue to construct the LCC South campus. He lauded the excellent teamwork of all involved in the birth and continuing advancement of the college library.
William Wisner, a long-time member of the LCC family and the librarian for the South Library, provided an overview of the library services and facilities, all of which are led by a staff whose mission is to provide patrons with an inviting and warm atmosphere for lifelong learning and meaning.
The library contains library stacks, a computer room and a bibliographical instructional room. The facility, which currently houses about 10,000 books, will eventually contain 18,000 volumes.
Students and patrons have access to thousands of electronic journals, magazines, newspapers and other publications on the World Wide Web. Staff members man a circulation desk, and offer inter-/intra-library and reference services.
Bibliographic instruction is also offered to teach students how to effectively search for books and other data in the library.
Located at the center of the new LCC South campus, the college library is currently open Monday through Thursday from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. and on Friday from 8 a.m. to 12 noon.
