LCC boosts healthcare with more nurses

 

The city is receiving a major boost to its healthcare system with Laredo Community College’s recent graduation of 18 students this week from its one- and two-year nursing programs.

Graduates of the one-year Vocational Nursing program were formally recognized during pinning ceremonies on Tuesday, December 14, in the Kazen College Center.

The VN graduates are Nadia M. Castillo, Ramiro Del Bosque, III, Arturo Garcia, Reyna Hernandez, Jesús C. Herrera, Jr., Melissa Jaramillo, Consuelo M. Martinez, Sabino Mena, III, Jessica D. Moreno, Rebeca C. Muñoz, Sanjuanita Nava, Alejandro Perez, Jacqueline J. Topacio and Oscar A. Villanueva.

A traditional pinning ceremony to recognize candidates for graduation from the two-year Associate Degree Nursing (ADN) program was held on Thursday, December 16, in the de la Garza Building, room 101.

The December 2004 ADN graduates include Becky Flores, Rebecca Guajardo, Ignacio Ortiz, Jr., and Sylvia Ramirez.  

Highlights of both nursing ceremonies were the presentation of the Merit and Mary Alice Lopez Awards.  The recipients for the VN program were Ramiro Del Bosque, III, who received the Mary Alice Lopez Award, and Arturo Garcia, Merit Award honoree.

During the ADN Pinning, the Merit and Mary Alice Lopez Awards were given to Ignacio Ortiz, Jr., and Sylvia Ramirez, respectively.    

The Vocational Nursing Program at LCC is a clinically-intensive one-year certificate program which offers classroom instruction and valuable clinical practice in four basic areas of nursing, including fundamentals, medical/surgical, maternity/pediatric and psychiatric.  Upon graduation, the vocational  nursing  student  is  eligible  to  take  the National Council Licensure Examination for Practical Nurses (NCLEX-PN). 

The VN program is fully accredited by the Board of Vocational Nurse Examiners for the State of Texas.  The application period for Fall 2005 admission to the VN program is in progress through July 6, 2005.  For more information, call 721-5255.

The Associate Degree Nursing Program at LCC is fully accredited by the Texas Board of Nurse Examiners and the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission.

The Associate Degree Nursing program at LCC prepares graduates for licensure as a Registered Nurse (RN).  Students implement the nursing process with client care in a structured health care setting.  The students participate in hands-on  clinical  experience  at  the  two  local  hospitals   and   at  other   sites throughout the community.

The college is currently accepting applications from prospective students for fall 2005 admission to the ADN program.  Applications for admission to the program are available at the LCC ADN Office, located in Lopez Nursing Building, room 126. Admission to the program is competitive and based on specific admission criteria.  The deadline to submit applications for fall 2005 admission is Thursday, May 26. 

LCC also offers an ADN Transition Track open to licensed vocational nurses and paramedics who meet college admission criteria and other requirements.  The deadline to apply for Summer 2005 admission is April 15.
