Kids have access to summer fun at LCC

Children of all ages have an all-access summer pass to learn, kick or swing at Laredo Community College.  Parents have choices to send their children to college to benefit from recreational and educational activities.

RECREATIONAL CAMPS

An array of camps to stay fit or learn a new pastime are available, courtesy of the LCC Athletics/Kinesiology Department.

This includes a four-day Palomino baseball camp, which starts Monday, June 14.  Campers, ages 7 to 15, will meet from 9 a.m. to 12 noon at LCC Doc Sanchez Field.  Camp director and head baseball coach Chase Tidwell will cover several aspects of the sport.  The camp fee is $75.

LCC will also offer indoor camps for basketball and arena soccer in the Maravillo Gymnasium.  The next sessions will meet Monday through Thursday, June 21 to July 1.  Basketball camp is $55 per participant and meets from 1 to 4 p.m.; soccer camp is $35 per child and meets from 4:15 to 7:10 p.m.

To sign your children for these camps, call 721-5326.

SCIENCE CAMP

For parents with a young biologist in their family, LCC is offering a fun way for them to explore the fascinating world of environmental science. Children are invited to be part of the educational summer experience offered by the Lamar Bruni Vergara Environmental Science Center at LCC.

The camp sessions include one-week, half-day sessions for ages 6 to 8 and full-day, one-week sessions for ages 9 to 14.

Junior campers (ages 6-8) will meet Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.  Daycare is available until 4:30 p.m. for an additional charge.

Camp sessions for ages 9 to 14 will be from Monday through Thursday from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The camp will encourage participants to appreciate and respect the environment and nature’s living creatures.  Campers will have an opportunity to study native wildlife in its natural habitat at LCC’s Paso del Indio Nature Trail.

An advanced camp for ages 12 to 15, meeting July 19-23, will include aquatic biology, snorkeling, introduction to scuba diving, kayaking and canoeing. Awards will be presented to all campers at the completion of each session.  Lunch will also be provided.

The LBVESC Summer Camp 2004 sessions include July 5-9, ages 6-8; July 12-16, ages 9-11; and July 19-23, two groups - ages 12-15 and ages 6-8.
