LCC volleyball team to host tryouts Sunday

Jennielle Strother, preparing for her fourth year as head coach of the Laredo Community College volleyball program, invites area women to participate in tryouts on Sunday, December 5, from 12 to 3 p.m. in the Maravillo Gymnasium.

“Some 15 kids, from all over Texas, have expressed an interest in trying out for the Lady Palomino volleyball team.  I encourage athletes locally and in the region to come out on December 5.  I am looking to fill seven positions on the team.”

Interested student-athletes should complete a questionnaire in advance; the form is available online at www.laredo.edu/athletics.  The form may also be requested via fax by calling Coach Strother at 721-5899

High school seniors who plan to graduate in May 2005 are especially encouraged to participate.

Strother says she will be reviewing the prospective student-athlete’s academic grades and athletic skills.

“At Laredo Community College, we strive to bring student-athletes who perform well in the classroom and on the court,” said Strother.

Under her guidance, the LCC Lady Palominos have reached the playoffs for the highly competitive Region XIV, District I conference in 2002 and 2003.  Several players guided by Coach Strother have advanced their volleyball careers to play for universities, including Texas A&M-Kingsville, Mid-America, UT-San Antonio and TAMIU.

Strother is a member of the International Sports Federation and holds certifications from the USA Volleyball organization in the areas of Coaching Accreditation Program-Level 1 and Volleyball Conditioning Specialist.
