College heads congratulate LCC tennis star

Laredo Community College tennis standout Alex Ortega met with college leaders on Friday to showcase an award he received last month in Forest Hills, New York, on his selection to the 2004 Intercollegiate Tennis Association All-Star Team. The ITA and the Nick Bollettieri Tennis Academy treated Ortega and the rest of the All-Star Team to a weekend in New York, highlighted by activities at the West Side Tennis Club, a former site of the U.S. Open, where he met the legendary Coach Bollettieri and ITA Executive Director David Benjamin. From left, are LCC Athletic Director Troy Van Brunt, LCC President Dr. Ramon Dovalina, Ortega, LCC Tennis Coach Jaime Donjuan and Vice-President for Instruction and Student Development Dr. Juan Maldonado. Last fall, Ortega became the first LCC tennis athlete to become the nation’s No. 1 ranked player in community/junior colleges. He was also selected the 2004 NJCAA Rookie of the Year and named an ITA All-American.
