LCC, LISD launch new educational partnership

Laredo Community College and the Laredo Independent School District have partnered to broaden educational opportunities for high school students to earn college credit in professional fields related to banking and finance.

Leaders from the college, school district and the South Texas Tech Prep program held a ceremony Monday, March 1, at LCC’s Laird Hall to sign a new Tech Prep articulation agreement.

Under the agreement, LISD will offer three courses at the high school level: Accounting I, Banking and Financial Systems and Business Ownership. The courses will focus on the fundamentals of accounting and banking functions.

Through an articulation agreement, LISD high school students can earn up to seven college credit hours that can be applied towards an Associate in Applied Science Degree in Banking and Finance at LCC.

“Laredo Community College is pleased to continue strengthening its strong partnership with Laredo Independent School District to provide greater access to a higher education. This is a rewarding opportunity for students to begin their college education while still in high school,” said LCC President Dr. Ramon H. Dovalina.

LCC has established Tech Prep articulation agreements in Criminal Justice with LISD, as well as the school districts of United, Rio Grande City and Crystal City.

Students can take the articulated courses as early as their junior year in high school.  Students must pass each course with a grade of 80 or better to receive college credit.

School officials recommend that students visit their school counselors to ensure that they are enrolled in the appropriate curriculum for the degree plan.

After high school graduation, students must pass an “end-of-course” competency exam for each of the designated courses.

To claim the Tech Prep “credit-in-escrow,” the student must enroll at LCC within 15 months after receiving a high school diploma and complete six hours of college credit within the AAS Banking and Finance degree requirements at LCC.

For more information, parents and students may contact Tech Prep Director Ricardo Hinojosa by calling 721-5165 or by e-mail at richinojosa@laredo.edu.
