Youth can hoop it up at LCC basketball camp

Laredo area children can once again spend their summer at Laredo Community College, courtesy of the popular Laredo Community College Basketball Day Camp.

Two, eight-day camps are planned, including a session from June 7 to 17 and another from June 21-July 1.    The basketball camps will meet Monday through Thursday from 1 to 4 p.m. at the LCC Maravillo Gymnasium.

Local physical education experts and coaches Dr. Sara Carrasco, Art Smith and Randy Gibbons will lead the annual Basketball Day Camp.  Carrasco is the department chairperson and instructor in the LCC Kinesiology Program and former coach.  Smith is an assistant basketball coach at Cigarroa High School.  Gibbons is a former assistant basketball coach for Providence High School in San Antonio.

Enrollment is open to kinder, elementary and middle school boys and girls, beginning with age 5 and ending with middle school students who have not played varsity basketball.

“Laredo Community College is pleased to once again offer a fun and recreational summer experience for the benefit of area youth.  Our head clinicians are college and high school coaches who love working with young people and who really live the game,” said Carrasco.

In addition to helping campers develop their athletic abilities, coaches hope the camp will give participants a dose of self-confidence and positive discipline.

Highlights of the camp include individualized instruction, challenging age-level league play and awards for all competition.

Camp fee is $55 per session.

For more information about the summer camps, contact the LCC Athletic/Kinesiology Department by calling 721-5326.  Office hours are Mondays through Thursdays from 8 a.m. to 12 noon and 1 to 7 p.m.
