City Spelling Bee set for March 27 at LCC

Laredo Community College will be buzzing with bees on Saturday, March 27.  However, these bees don’t sting or collect pollen.  They spell and will attempt to collect coveted honors during the annual City-Wide Spelling Bee Contest.

The event, sponsored by the Literacy Volunteers of Laredo, Laredo Morning Times and the Laredo National Bank, will be held at the theater of the LCC Guadalupe and Lilia Martinez Fine Arts Center from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.  Admission is free and open to family and friends of the spelling bee participants, as well as the community.

The Spelling Bee contest, says LVL executive director Gabriela Rodriguez, is open to one student from each school in the Laredo region, including Laredo and United ISDs, local parochial schools, Webb Consolidated and Zapata County ISDs.  Students in elementary and up to ages 14 are expected to vie for the spelling bee honors.

“The City-Wide Spelling Bee Contest usually features the participation of about 60 students from the Laredo region,” notes Rodriguez.

Several prizes will be awarded to the winners.  The top prize will be an all-expenses paid trip, sponsored by the Laredo Morning Times, for the first place winner and a parent to attend the 77th annual Scripps National Spelling Bee Contest in Washington, D.C. in June.

Gerardo Sifuentes, a long-time LCC employee and an adjunct reading instructor, is organizing the event for LVL.  Sifuentes is a board member of the non-profit organization.

This year's contest pronouncer will be KGNS TV new anchor Tim Gutierrez.

The event’s judges will be Dr. Marie Toni Howell of LCC, Dr. Thomas Mitchell of Texas A & M International University and radio DJ Sunni Storm of KQUR 95.

For more information, contact Rodriguez at the LVL office on the LCC campus by calling 724-5207.
