LCC to honor region’s top 100 high school seniors

Laredo Community College will recognize the best and brightest academic achievers from Laredo and area high schools during the 2004 South Texas Blue Chip Scholars Award Ceremony on Thursday, April 29.

Co-sponsored by LCC and Henri Kahn Insurance, the awards reception for the Blue Chip Scholars, their parents, and school officials will begin at 4:30 p.m. in the William N. “Billy” Hall Jr. Student Center at LCC South, 5500 South Zapata Highway.

This year’s keynote speaker will be U.S. Consul Michael Yoder.

LCC launched the Blue Chip Scholars program in 1996 to recognize achievement of the region’s Top 100 high school graduates from Laredo, Bruni, Hebbronville and Zapata.

The purpose of the Blue Chip Scholars program is to single out and honor the most academically-gifted graduating high school seniors with the special awards ceremony.  Selection is based solely on academic performance.  The Scholars are nominated by administrators from their respective high schools.  The students represent the highest level of achievement in their graduating class.

“One usually hears the term blue chip in reference to top caliber athletes or high-performing stocks, but in this case, Laredo Community College has adapted the phrase to mean the high achieving students whose academic performance is noteworthy and admirable,” says Dovalina.

Graduating seniors from 11 local and area high schools will be conferred the 2004 South Texas Blue Chip Scholar award.
