Members of the Laredo Community College Lady Palomino volleyball team will undergo several weeks of military-style training during the first ever Volleyball Boot Camp, which began Thursday, April 8, at 3 p.m. in the Maravillo Gymnasium.
Head Coach Jennielle Strother explained that student-athletes are participating in the boot camp led by Captain Alfred Silva and his ROTC team. The volleyball players will learn what their maximums and minimums are in physical skills, ranging from a two-mile run, to pushups and sit-ups. Silva is an instructor of military science at LCC.
“The Lady Palominos have been training on their own for the past two weeks in preparation for boot camp to determine how they fare physically, according to US Army standards,” said Strother. “Capt. Silva will be putting them through a conditioning/strengthening regime that will test their limits as individuals and as a team.”
The team will work out every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday beginning at 3:00 pm. for approximately two to three weeks.
“Capt. Silva and his ROTC crew have been helpful and have invested a lot of time in the volleyball program. They have already hosted a nutrition/health seminar with the girls and now are taking it a step further by conditioning them,” added Strother.
Coach Strother speaks with pride over the student-athletes’ response to meet the challenge.
“The LCC volleyball team has responded to the challenge in ways that we could never imagine,” said Strother. “Their motto for the new season is ‘Fighting for the RING,’ which makes reference to their quest to bring the national championship ring to the Gateway City.”
Ten student-athletes are participating in the Boot Camp. They include Lisa Barrera, Tatiana Flores, Diana Martinez, Tara Van Brunt, Vanessa Soriano, Alyn Marlow, Krisyerkis Hernandez, Candace Ramirez, Erika Sanchez, and Daisy Gamboa. All are freshmen, returning as sophomores for the fall 2004 season.
