Interactive seminar on mass images in popular culture at LCC

A nationally recognized professor of culture and women’s studies, Dr. Susan Bordo will present a 60-minute interactive seminar entitled “The Empire of Images: Growing Up Male and Female in a World Dominated by Popular Culture,” Tuesday, October 26, at 6:30 p.m.  The seminar, which will be conducted live via satellite broadcast, will be shown on the Laredo Community College campus in de la Garza Building, room 101.

Sponsored by the LCC Phi Theta Kappa Chapter and the Honors Program, the satellite broadcast is free and open to students and the public.

Dr. Bordo is professor of English and women’s studies and holds the Otis A. Singletary Chair in the Humanities at the University of Kentucky.  She is the author of several books, including Unbearable Weight: Feminism, Western Culture and the Body, and her newest, The Male Body: A New Look at Men in Public and in Private.  Bordo’s writings have given birth to a field of work known as “body studies.”

Dr. Bordo will examine the power of mass imagery to teach young girls and boys the “rules” for success in this culture.  These images have resulted in an unprecedented emphasis on the “fit” body, physical attractiveness, and sexual allure.  Mass images have also challenged many long-standing taboos about manliness and femininity, and created a visual world of racial and ethnic diversity that is allowing more young people to feel mirrored and included in the culture.  Mass media is thus a powerful tool for cultural change, both positive and negative.

The program, which is co-produced by Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society and the National Collegiate Honors Council (NCHC), is the third installment of a five part Honors Satellite Seminar series entitled “Popular Culture: Shaping and Reflecting Who We Are.”

For more information about the local showing of the satellite broadcast, contact LCC Phi Theta Kappa Senior Advisors/Honors Program Coordinators Jose Compean at 721-5304 or Dr. Jacinto Juarez at 721-5832.
