
Laredo Community College Guitar Instructor Cain Budds will deliver an evening of music from the Masters in a special LCC Faculty Recital on Thursday, February 19.
Sponsored by the LCC Music and Dance Department, the solo recital on Feb. 19 will begin at 7:30 p.m. in the auditorium of the LCC Guadalupe and Lilia Martinez Fine Arts Center. Admission is free of charge to students and the public.
Budds
will present an array of music composed for the guitar.
The concert will begin with two selections by composer John Dowland,
including The Most Sacred Queen Elizabeth, her Galliard
and The Frog Galliard. The
program will continue with two pieces by Spanish master composer Luys de Narvaez,
including Guardame las Vacas
and La Cancion del Emperador (Mille Regretz).
Budds
will also perform Andante et Polonaise, Op. 44 by leading French virtuoso
guitarist Napoleon
Coste, and Gigue and Double from BWV 997 by
Johann Sebastian Bach.
Next on the program will be the performance of Augustín Barrios’ La Catedral, consisting of three movements, including Preludio “Saudade,” Andante Religioso and Allegro Solemne.
Other
selections that Budds will perform during the concert include Suite
in D by Spanish
guitarist/composer Santiago de Murcia, El Decameron Negro by Cuban Leo
Brouwer, Usher-Valse (after Edgar A. Poe) by internationally celebrated
composer Nikita Koshkin and Serenata Española by Spanish piano composer
Joaquin Malats.
Budds is currently working toward the Doctor of Musical Arts degree in classical guitar performance at Arizona State University. While in residence there, he was a student of Frank Koonce and served as faculty associate in the internationally recognized classical guitar program.
In addition, Budds has held several teaching positions including North Valley School of the Arts in Scottsdale, Southwestern College in Phoenix. He also served as a member of the music faculty at Glendale Community College from 1998-2000.
Budds received his bachelor’s and master's degrees from Illinois State University. He studied guitar with Professor Manley Mallard, III, at Millikin University in Illinois as well as with Dr. Douglas Rubio and noted performer and teacher Dr. Angelo Favis.
He has performed numerous times in recitals and in master classes with outstanding performers including Eliot Fisk, Paul Henry, William Kanengiser, Margarita Escarpa, Kevin Gallagher, Stephen Robinson and Javier Garcia-Moreno.
Budds' research project for the Doctor of Musical Arts degree deals with the solo guitar music of Russian guitarist and composer Nikita Koshkin.
