MONDAY, OCTOBER 25, 2004

Tickets for a Laredo Community College concert fundraiser featuring Grammy nominated Mariachi Sol De Mexico de Jose Hernandez are available at the LCC Bursar’s Office, Guadalupe Music Shop, Laredo Mini Mart and San Ramon Record Shop.  The concert, part of LCC’s first-ever Viva el Mariachi! Festival and Competition, will be October 30 at 7 p.m. in the LCC Martinez Fine Arts Center.  The opening act will be Los Arrieros de Laredo.  Major credit cards are accepted, including ticket orders by phone.  For more information, call 721-5140.

 

Middle and high school mariachi student ensembles and musicians from Laredo and area high schools are invited to participate in the first ever Viva el Mariachi! Festival and Competition, October 29-30, at Laredo Community College.  Students can take advantage of instructional clinics, ensemble/vocal competition and enjoy a concert featuring Mariachi Sol de Mexico de Jose Hernandez and Los Arrieros de Laredo.  For more information, contact the LCC Music and Dance Department, 721-5330.

 

The Camilo Prada Child Development Center of Laredo Community College is open and enrolling 2-, 3- and 4-year old children.  The Prada Center is located at LCC South, 5500 South Zapata Highway.  For tuition and fees information or to enroll your child, call 794-4561.

 

The Laredo Community College Art Department is displaying an exhibit by LCC alum Eduardo Aguilar, entitled Juxtaposition of Real and Abstract Landscapes.  Now through October 29, students and art lovers are invited to see the exhibit at the LCC Art Gallery.  Hours are Mondays through Thursdays from 8 a.m. to 12 noon and 1 to 6 p.m. and Fridays from 8 a.m. to 12 noon.  For more information, call 721-5224.

 

TUESDAY, OCTOBER 26, 2004

International Bank of Commerce will make an announcement in support of higher education and students at Laredo Community College.  The announcement will be at 3 p.m. in the Community Suite of the Billy Hall Student Center at LCC South, 5500 South Zapata Highway.  For more information, call 721-5140.

FRIDAY, OCTOBER 29, 2004

Laredo Community College launches the two-day “Viva el Mariachi” Festival and Competition.  Today, members of the nationally acclaimed Mariachi Sol de Mexico de Jose Hernandez and Los Arrieros de Laredo will offer master classes to participating middle and high school mariachi musicians from 8 to 10 a.m. at the LCC Guadalupe and Lilia Martinez Fine Arts Center and Music and Dance Buildings I and II.  The student musicians will then be featured in a mini concert from 1 to 2 p.m. in the Martinez Fine Arts Center theater; admission is free and open to the public.  The event will continue at 6 p.m. in the Martinez Fine Arts Center theater with a competition featuring the middle and high school mariachi ensembles.  For more information, call 721-5330.

 

La Pequeña Barraca Spanish Club of Laredo Community College will display a traditional “Altar de los Muertos” from 8 a.m. to 12 noon in the Kazen College Center.  The altar celebrates the Mexican holiday, Day of the Dead, which is observed on October 31.  The altar may be viewed free of charge by students and the community.  For more information, call Spanish Club Advisor Cynthia Aradillas, 721-5355.

SATURDAY, OCTOBER 30, 2004

The “Viva el Mariachi” Festival and Competition continues at Laredo Community College.  Today, participating middle and high school mariachi vocalists take part in a competition at 9 a.m. in the Martinez Fine Arts Center theater.  Members of Jose Hernandez’s Mariachi Sol de Mexico will offer a master class to musicians of the LCC Mariachi Palomino and Los Arrieros de Laredo at 1 p.m. in the Martinez Fine Arts Center, room 101.  The celebration concludes with a special concert fundraiser featuring Grammy nominated Mariachi Sol de Mexico de Jose Hernandez at 7 p.m. in the Martinez Fine Arts Center.  Reserved seating includes tickets for $35, $50 and $125 (includes meet and greet reception with the artists).
