LCC, Rotary hosts 57th Career Day for high school seniors
Laredo Community College and local Rotary Clubs again joined forces to bring a valuable job exploration experience for more than 1,000 seniors in Laredo high schools during the 57th annual LCC-Rotary Career Day on Tuesday, November 2, on the college campus on the west end of Washington Street.
“The LCC-Rotary Career Day is intended to provide students with up-to-date information on potential career paths,” said Jesse Porras, Director of Counseling and Assessment at LCC.
About 1,140 seniors from Alexander, L.B. Johnson, United and United South attended the November 2 session.
Campus tours led by LCC students were available from 8:45 to 9:25 a.m. The tours began in front of the Maravillo Gymnasium. Musical entertainment by the LCC Mariachi Palomino ensemble was provided from 9:30 to 10 a.m. in the college gym.
A general assembly for all the participants was held from 10 to 10:20 a.m. in the LCC gym. Among the speakers were LCC Vice-President for Instruction and Student Development Dr. Juan Maldonado and Laredo Rotary Club President Mike Kazen.
Afterwards, the students participated in a breakout session from the more than 50 career presentations hosted by LCC faculty members, local professionals and business people. Students were encouraged to ask speakers questions about the educational requirements, daily activities and salary expectations of a given job. The session was from 10:40 to 11:35 a.m. in various classrooms throughout campus. Career options ranged from architecture, engineering and computer science, to medicine, technical, and social services. Free soft drinks were available to the high school seniors from 11:35 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the campus mall.
A second session of Career Day will be held at a later date for seniors of other local and area high schools.
