Martin High School senior Ruben Castillo received a sweetheart of a deal on Valentine’s Day. Castillo (pictured at center) won second place in the high school division of the Region Seven Scholastic Chess Championship held on Feb. 14 at Alexander High School. Additionally, Laredo Community College recognized Castillo by awarding him a $1,000 scholarship to attend LCC after graduation. Congratulating the talented chess player are, from left, LCC President Dr. Ramon H. Dovalina, and LCC Science Instructor Rukmani Viswanath, who was actively involved in the planning of the chess tournament.
