This fall, Laredo Community College has launched three new certificate programs of study, including a one semester Basic Skills Certificate, a two-semester Personal Computer Support Specialist Certificate, and a three-semester Business Applications Specialist Certificate.
The new certificates were developed by the LCC Computer Information Systems Department to provide students with immediate training for an industry with jobs that are plentiful and rewarding, said Luciano Ramon, CIS Department Chair.
“The certificates are ideal for students who want an early exit-point, but who plan to continue their education in computers,” explained Ramon.
The program covers an understanding of PC operating systems, integrated software applications, internet, networking, computer hardware, and help desk support.
Students who complete the certificates have the ability to apply their college credit hours toward a two-year Associate in Applied Science Degree with a specialization in Business Applications.
The one-semester Basic Skills Certificate is comprised of four classes, including ITSC 1401 Introduction to Computers, ITSC 1405 Introduction to PC Operating Systems, ITSC 1409 Integrated Software Applications I, and ITNW 1437 Introduction to the Internet.
After completing the one-semester certificate, students can advance their knowledge and skills with the Personal Computer Support Specialist Certificate, which includes ITNW 1425 Fundamentals of Networking Technologies, ITSC 1425 Personal Computer Hardware, ITSC 2439 Personal Computer Help Desk and ITSC 1413 Internet/Web Page Development.
In the three-semester Business Applications Specialist Certificate, students learn how to integrate business applications with computer technology. Coursework includes ITSC 2421 Integrated Software Applications II, ACNT 1403 Introduction to Accounting I, POFI 1401 Computer Applications I and ACNT 1404 Introduction to Accounting II.
Classes began Monday, August 30.
