LCC to host criminal justice educators conference

Homeland security, Mexican mafia gangs and issues related to law enforcement education are among the topics to be discussed during the Community College Criminal Justice Educators of Texas (CCCJET) 2004 summer conference at Laredo Community College.

The five-day conference, hosted by the LCC Protective Services Department, began on May 16 and continues through May 20.  More than 50 criminal justice educators from community colleges across the state were expected to attend.

Ray Garner, Director of the LCC Regional Police Academy and CCCJET President of the statewide committee, said that the conference offers educators with an opportunity for professional growth.  The participants also stay current on issues affecting criminal justice professionals in Texas.

“This is a valuable opportunity for the participants to earn graduate or TCLEOSE credit and learn how they can enhance their curriculum to produce quality law enforcement professionals,” said Garner.

The event will begin with a round table discussion focusing on border issues on Sunday, May 16, at 7 p.m. at the Holiday Inn Civic Center, 800 Garden Street.

On May 17, the conference will continue at the Protective Services Center at the new LCC South campus, 5500 South Zapata Highway.  The session topics and times include seamless (college to university)  transition, 8 a.m.;  Homeland Security, 9 a.m.;  Columbian drug cartels, 1 p.m., Mexican mafia gang investigation, 3 p.m.; and a round table discussion on terrorism.

The May 18th conference activity will consist of a comprehensive review of the Mexican Prison System from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.  At 7 p.m., participants will engage in a round table discussion focusing on immigration concerns.

On May 19, from 1 to 6 p.m., conference participants will learn about new emergency vehicle operations, including the General Electric I-Sim Driving Simulator.  A round table discussion on border issues will be held at 7 p.m.

The conference focus on May 20 will be on Tech Prep articulation issues for criminal justice education.
