This spring, the Community Education Department at Laredo Community College is going south, adding course offerings to the LCC South Campus beginning March 1. LCC South, located at 5500 South Zapata Highway, opens its doors on March 1 with a slate of continuing education classes to help Laredo and area residents upgrade job skills and enrich lives.
Lewis Pack, Director of Community Education at LCC, explains that office activity at his department is running at a feverish pace as staff prepare for the “big launch.” Most continuing education classes will be taught in the new Academic Advanced Technology Center at LCC South. Courses will continue to be offered at Laredo Community College on West End Washington Street as well.
“Extending the services and benefits of community education to the Laredo Community College South campus is an enormous project,” said Pack. “But, our staff is excited to undertake this challenging experience. We look forward to delivering a quality education and make dreams a reality for South Laredo and the surrounding region.”
Among the new programs available to adults at LCC South is a General Office Clerk Certificate which starts March 1. The cost of the whole training program is $430, and financial aid is available to eligible persons through the Texas Workforce Center. For more information about financial aid call 794-6500.
The 240-hour certificate program consists of six classes, focusing on topics such as general office skills, keyboarding, communication skills, word processing, Microsoft Excel, plus Internet and e-mail.
The Security Officer Academy, which is part of the continuing education program, will be available at LCC South. Three levels of training to receive a certificate for private security officer will be available, beginning March 1 also. The trainees will learn about the various professionals working in the investigations and security industry, and rules that govern security officers who carry firearms, take field notes, write reports and much more.
Computer technology is an important function of everyday living, whether it is for work, study or recreation, says Jane Heidt, Continuing Education Projects Coordinator.
“The LCC Continuing Education Department is offering computer courses to support training for current and emerging technology,” said Heidt. “Most courses are short term, and available days, evenings and in English and Spanish to better accommodate the needs of our students.”
The level of the coursework ranges from the basics to the sophisticated.
For example, the Computer Crash course offers a comprehensive overview about the computer. This is an ideal class for someone who has never worked with a computer. The same instruction will be offered in the Spanish class, Curso de Computación para Principiantes. The fee for either course is $49.
