This fall, Laredo Community College offers more opportunities for the study of communication arts, including new classes in speech and drama.
“The availability of our new theater in the Guadalupe and Lilia Martinez Fine Arts Center, and growing student demand have led LCC to expand the disciplines of theater arts, speech and drama,” said Maria Elizabeth Garcia, Reading/Speech Department Chairperson.
In the area of drama, several courses will be offered at the LCC main campus near downtown. These include DRAM1310, Introduction to Theater, which will meet Mondays and Wednesdays from 1:30 to 2:50 p.m. Instructor Gil Martinez, Jr., said this course is now part of the LCC Core Curriculum and can be applied toward a related four-year degree at any state university.
Another course, DRAM1330, Stagecraft I, will offer students the opportunity to learn basic scenery construction, rigging, and lighting, among other aspects of theater production. Zane Richter will teach the class on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3 to 4:30 p.m. Students must also enroll in a laboratory which gives hands-on learning experiences.
Other new courses include DRAM1351 and DRAM1352, Acting I and II, which will be taught by new instructor Floyd Reed. These classes will meet on Mondays and Wednesdays from 4 to 5:20 p.m. Acting I will introduce students to basic skills and techniques of acting, including sensory awareness, ensemble performance, character and script analysis, and much more. In Acting II, students will continue to develop their skills and techniques of acting.
While some may dread the thought of standing before a large audience of strangers to deliver a speech, the study of speech communication has continued to grow each semester at LCC.
“Speech communications has become increasingly popular and is seen as a necessary skill for persons entering fields in law enforcement, public relations and other areas that require significant contact with the public,” said instructor Martinez.
Fifteen sections of the introductory course to speech communication, SPCH1311, will be offered at LCC, including three course sections at the new LCC South campus, 5500 South Zapata Highway. Morning, afternoon, evening and online courses are available for the benefit of students.
This fall, LCC introduces SPCH1318, Interpersonal Communication, which will meet Tuesdays and Thursdays from 12:30 to 1:50 p.m. at the LCC main campus.
This course, says Martinez, will explore theories and exercises in verbal and nonverbal communication with focus on interpersonal relationships.
Another course available this fall is SPCH1315, Public Speaking, which will be taught on both campuses. Instructor Charley Brassell will teach the course at the main campus on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9:30 to 10:50 a.m. Leigh-Anne Williams will teach the course at the south campus on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 2 to 3:30 p.m. SPCH1315, like SPCH1311, is part of the LCC Core Curriculum.
The in-district (with city limits) tuition and fees for each of these three-hour college credit courses is $162.
Students can register for fall semester courses now through August 9 via the college’s On Line Enrollment (OLÉ) system. Early advisement will be offered July 26 through 28 at both campuses.
