Some 200 Laredo Community College students benefited from the televised presentation of the first presidential debate held on September 30 in the LCC Guadalupe and Lilia Martinez Fine Arts Center.
Event organizer, Kevin Bishop, who teaches history at LCC, says that the theater-style showing of the C-SPAN TV production was well attended by students representing a cross-section of instructional disciplines.
“The crowd was very attentive and appreciated the opportunity to view the first presidential debate on a large TV screen in the Martinez Fine Arts Center,” said Bishop.
He added that the college’s Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society was successful in registering 30 students to vote in the upcoming Presidential elections.
The series of nationally televised debates will continue Tuesday, October 5, with a debate featuring Vice-Presidential candidates Dick Cheney and John Edwards. The debate will be broadcasted live from Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio.
Future debates include a town-hall format with Republican nominee, President George W. Bush and Democratic nominee, Senator John Kerry on October 8; and a third Presidential Debate focusing on domestic policy on October 13.
LCC students, faculty and staff are invited to watch debates at the Martinez Fine Arts Center. Each debate starts at 8 p.m. and is expected to last 90 minutes. The debates are sponsored by the bipartisan Commission on Presidential Debates.
No large bags, backpacks, containers or food/drink will be allowed in the Martinez Fine Arts Center. The event is intended for college students and employees. No political signs or on-site discussion of the debates will be allowed. For more information, contact Bishop by calling 794-4801.
