In recognition of Financial Aid Awareness Month, Laredo Community College will present “Applying for Financial Aid: The FAFSA Process” on February 5. It will be the ninth consecutive videoconference hosted by the Texas Guaranteed Student Loan Corporation (TG) to help students and families complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).
Admission is free of charge to high school and college students, as well as their parents. LCC will serve as a host site for the videoconference on Thursday, February 5, from 7 to 8 p.m. in de la Garza Building, room 101. LCC will also present the videoconference in Spanish in de la Garza Building, room 108.
The FAFSA is the first step students must complete to determine their financial aid eligibility. According to the U.S. Department of Education, nearly $50 billion in federal grants, loans and work-study aid will be awarded during the current school year.
"Completing the FAFSA, which has approximately 100 questions, can be a lengthy process," said Richard Sapp, TG's director of awareness programs. "However, the teleconference is designed to help remove some of the frustration by taking students and their parents step-by-step through the entire application."
To complete the FAFSA during the event, students or parents are advised to bring with them: the student's driver's license; Social Security card; W-2 forms and other records of money earned in 2003; 2003 U.S. income tax return (IRS Form 1040, 1040A, 1040EZ, OR 1040TEL); records of untaxed income, such as welfare, social security, TANF (Temporary Assistance for Needy Families), or veterans benefits; current bank statements; current mortgage information (excluding primary home); business and farm records; and stocks, bonds, and other investment records.
