
Filing
is underway at Laredo Community College for persons seeking a place on the
ballot for the LCC board of trustee election on May 15.
The
LCC District will hold the election on Saturday, May 15, to fill three vacancies
on its board of trustees.
Applications
to file for a place on the ballot are available from Nora Stewart, LCC Internal
Auditor and the college’s presiding officer for elections. Deadlines, forms
and guidelines are also available online at www.laredo.edu/elections.
The
application may be submitted to Stewart at the LCC Administration Annex Building
in person or by mail to Laredo Community College, West End Washington Street
#242, Laredo, TX 78040. Applications
must be received at LCC by March 15, before 5 p.m.
Vacancies
on the nine member board include: Position 1, currently held by Cynthia Mares;
Position 2, currently held by Dr. Leonides G. Cigarroa, Jr.; and Position 3,
currently held by Sabas Zapata, III.
Residents
of the LCC college district, which encompasses the city limits of Laredo, can
file to become a candidate if they meet the following criteria:

Must be a registered voter.

Must reside within the Laredo Community College District.

Must take proper oath of office and serve as trustee without compensation.
A
campaign treasurer must also be appointed and documents filed before any
contributions are accepted or expenditures are made on behalf of a candidate.
A
drawing for positions on the ballot will be on Tuesday, March 16, at 10 a.m. in
the Webb County Elections Administration Office, located at 1110 Washington St.,
Suite 103.
Candidates
can obtain applications and more information online at www.laredo.edu/elections,
or from Nora Stewart in Room 101 of the LCC Administration Annex Building,
between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays and on Fridays from 8 a.m.
to 12 noon.
Early
voting will be held from April 28 to May 11 at various locations across town,
including the LCC Human Resources Office, Webb County Elections Administration
Office, Mall del Norte, K-Mart, LISD/UISD schools, City Hall and mobile units at
different sites.
Trustees
are elected to six-year, staggered terms. The
Board meets monthly, holds special meetings, and committee meetings.
The Board’s responsibilities are to:

set the policies or regulations under
which LCC is to be operated;
·
select the President of the College and
adopt regulations pertaining to the duties and responsibilities of the
executive, administrative, classified and instructional staff;
·
set the tax rate and approve the fiscal
operating budget;
·
appoint the College attorney, architect,
fiscal agent, audit firm, and bank depository; and
·
bear the legal responsibility and
authority for all aspects of the College’s operation.
