Voter awareness is topic of documentary film at LCC

Laredo Community College is offering students a unique opportunity to view a non-partisan documentary feature that explores the future of voting in the United States.

The LCC Student Activities office presented “Call It Democracy: A documentary film by Matt Kohn,” on Monday, October 11, at the Billy Hall Student Center community suite (5500 South Zapata Highway).  The film will be shown on Wednesday, October 13, in the Kazen College Center, room 121.  Show times at both campuses are at 12 noon, 2 p.m. and 4 p.m.  Admission is free and open to students and the community.

The documentary focuses on four key points, including the Electoral College and its role in deciding the election of the U.S. President; the Supreme Court and citizens voting rights; the swirl of recent voting technology controversies; and the importance of voting.

The film includes many insightful interviews, including comments from Charles Manson prosecutor Vincent Bugliosi, who wrote The Betrayal of America, which dissects the majority opinion in Bush vs. Gore.  Others include Harvard Law School professor Alan Dershowitz, Greg Palast of BBC’s Newsnight and Sen. Birch Bayh, framer of the 26th and 27th Amendments.

The film is endorsed by the Rock the Vote organization.

Director Kohn has produced, edited and directed short and full-length films, music videos, industrials and documentaries for the past 15 years.  His most recent short, “Rosa X Rays Joe,” won distinction as Best Experimental Film at SinCine2002.
