LCC lecture focuses on carbs for a diabetic

Can a diet that includes carbohydrates help or hinder the health of a person living with diabetes? Laredo Community College’s newest Kinesiology Instructor Beverly Boling will address that question during a wellness lecture at LCC on Wednesday, March 24.

Sponsored by the LCC Wellness program, the lecture on March 24 will be at 12 noon in the de la Garza Building, room 108.  Admission is free to students and the community.

Boling says she will provide valuable advice for diabetics in her lecture, “Carbohydrates: Friend or Foe?”

“With so much controversy in the media about the benefits and detriments of carbohydrates, this lecture will attempt to set the record straight.  Participants will learn what foods contain carbohydrates, and learn how to use carbs to control their blood sugar, among other topics,” says Boling.

Boling, a registered dietician, holds a Masters in Science in Nutrition from the University of Tennessee and a Masters in Education in Kinesiology from Auburn University in Alabama.

She was a clinical dietician for years and has taught nutrition and physical education at various schools, including Chicago State, Auburn, West Texas A&M and Brookhaven Community College in Dallas.  Boling joined LCC this spring and teaches power walking, aerobics, swimming, basketball and weight training.

For more information about the lecture, contact Boling or LCC Wellness Program Coordinator Lu Sparkman by calling the LCC Athletics/Kinesiology Department at 721-5326.  Office hours are Mondays through Thursdays from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Fridays from 8 a.m. to 12 noon.
