LCC to recognize writers, artists of college magazine

Literature and art lovers are invited to join Laredo Community College for a reception to honor the writers and artists who contributed to the Spring 2004 edition of the college magazine, La Frontera, on Wednesday, July 14.

The reception will be from 3 to 4:30 p.m. in the Arena Theater inside the LCC Adkins Building.  Admission is free and open to students and the public.

Now in its 19th issue of publication, La Frontera has been under the editorial direction of LCC English Instructor Toni Howell since fall of 2003.

The magazine, noted Howell, features the works of LCC students, staff and community.

“As we assembled this issue, I heard the strong voices of our contributors and felt moved by the sincerity and sense of self expressed in written and artistic pieces alike,” said Howell.

She added that the magazine features a new form of poetry called “found poetry,” created by poet Ronald Gross.

“Gross tells students to take a sentence from a prose source—a textbook, the newspaper, a popular magazine—and convert that sentence into a tiny poem.

To fashion this found poem, we are allowed to repeat words, take out words and rearrange words, but we are not permitted to add words.  The result can be delightful and sometimes sinister,” Howell added.

Also in this issue, winners were selected in both prose and poetry categories, said Howell.

“I Am” by Jennifer Torres and “Banishing Ghosts” by I. Teresa Santos are winners in the narrative category.  “This Is Me” by Myriam Garza, “Sensaciones” by Maria Esther Sierra Salas, and “Concealed” by Walter Muñoz won the poetry category.

Other contributors included Raul P. Aguilar, Rosalinda Guzman, Teresa Santos, Heidi Stelleman, Ricardo J. Treviño, Bobby Buitron, R.E.L., Cecilia Castañeda, Elida De Luna, Leslie Solis, Isaac Maldonado, Catherine Avaritt, Elizabeth Haber, Maggie Solano, Nancy Lara, David Quiroz, Isabel Leal, Deena Garza, Jose Terrones, Janet Cisneros, Perla Torres, Monica Rocha, Adriana Lopez, Dani Raschell Jimenez, Mauricio Gonzalez, Marcela Alvarez, Irlanda Karina Alvarez, Michelle Camacho, Leonel Rodriguez, Ulises Campos and Fabiola Rodriguez.

Copies of the spring 2004 edition of La Frontera will be available on campus, including the LCC Yeary Library.
