LCC
to offer free GED class for TANF clients
Laredo Community College will offer a free General Educational Development (GED) course on campus for eligible adults who desire to improve their English language skills.
The GED course is a multi-level class open to beginning and advanced students, said Hector Soliz of the LCC Adult Education Department. The class is scheduled to start on Monday, January 12, and continue throughout the duration of the college’s spring 2004 semester. Students will meet Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 12 noon on the LCC campus. The instructor will be Kathy Sacia.
“Through the support of state and federal funds, the class is offered free of charge to eligible clients of the Temporary Assistance to Needy Families or TANF,” said Soliz.
To qualify for the free classes, the students must be adults with children (under 18 years of age) who receive state or federal assistance in the form of TANF, food stamps, CHIPS, Medicaid, or the Free/Reduced Meal program.
Prior to participating in class, students must participate in a free orientation program which offers testing to determine their level of education, campus tours and workshops on study techniques and motivational talks.
