AAUW Laredo, LCC to host ‘Girls Can’ Conference

 

         The Lamar Bruni Vergara Environmental Science Center of Laredo Community College will be the site of the 10th annual Girls Can! Career Awareness Workshop on February 7.

The American Association of University Women (AAUW) and LCC will again team up to highlight rewarding career options to participating middle school girls on Saturday, February 7, from 8 a.m. to 12 noon.

A highlight of the workshop will a motivational presentation delivered by Dr. Sara Carrasco.

A tenured professor and chairperson of the Kinesiology Department, Carrasco will address the importance of physical fitness and good nutrition.

These are two key components, says Carrasco, to stay mentally fit and positive in school.

Another conference highlight will be a presentation delivered by Rukmani Viswanath.  A tenured biology instructor at LCC, Viswanath will share information about careers in science from the standpoint of research.

Work by LCC biology students at the Lamar Bruni-Vergara Environmental Science Center will be shared with the young conference participants.

Teachers from various fields will also be on hand to offer advice and information on teaching careers. The participants will have an opportunity to view live specimens housed in the Science Center, including alligators, snakes, and fish.  Plants from the Rio Grande are also featured at this one-of-a-kind center.

“The participants will spend a great morning on the college campus having fun and obtaining new information about careers,” said Maria Elizabeth Garcia, local AAUW president “They will also receive refreshments and have opportunities to win door prizes.

         Garcia invites all middle school girls to attend the conference.

Students should contact their middle school counselors or call LCC at 721-5337 for more information. Registration forms can be faxed to 721-5453.
