Transportation showcase at LCC South, May 8

Laredo Community College and the Transportation Safety Association are joining forces to present an informative and festive showcase of the newest trucks and training available in the transportation industry on Saturday, May 8.

The public is invited to view the showcase free of charge at the new LCC South campus, located at 5500 South Zapata Highway.  The event, associated with the three-day Transportation Safety Conference, will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The theme of the showcase, “Joining Hands for the Future,” emphasizes the major role that the college will fulfill in the transportation industry with a new training center dedicated to transportation technology at the LCC second campus.

“Laredo Community College is pleased to be working with the local transportation industry,” said Industrial Trades Department Chair Fortunato Aldape.  “This is a unique opportunity to view the newest trucks on the road and learn more about the new transportation industry training programs available in the state-of-the-art Raquel Gonzalez Automotive Technology Center at LCC South.”

The showcase will feature trucks from Peterbilt, Freightliners, Kenworth & Mack, “The Big Machines” by Fitzley, Inc., and new fire engine trucks from the Laredo Fire Department.

The exhibit will also consist of vehicles from the Laredo Police Department SWAT Team, Laredo Crime Stoppers and the Webb County Sheriff’s D.A.R.E. program.

Additionally, persons interested  in the rewarding careers available in the transportation industry are invited to participate in a job fair.  Representatives from numerous businesses will be present to highlight the job requirements for this industry.

The event will also offer food, drinks, games and shows for all ages to enjoy.  Among the unique and fun attractions will be a simulator from the Texas Motor Transportation Association.  Billed as a “truck within a truck,” it simulates the sensation of driving in an 18-wheeler.

Beginning this fall, the Gonzalez Automotive Technology Center at LCC South will offer vocational instruction for three industry training programs.  This includes one- and two-year certificates for ASE certified Automotive Technology, an associate’s degree and two certificates in ASE certified Diesel Mechanics and a new one-year certificate in Auto Body Repair.
