Vision of LCC South closer to reality

The community’s southern horizon continues to change. Schools, businesses and residential developments continue to expand into South Laredo and soon, Laredo Community College South will open its doors.

Construction of the $50 million campus continues with college-level and GED adult education courses expected to begin as early as March of 2004.  An inaugural celebration to showcase the impressive facilities is tentatively scheduled for Friday, April 16.

“The vision of Laredo Community College South continues to take shape for the benefit of Laredoans and citizens in surrounding communities,” said LCC President Dr. Ramon H. Dovalina.  “The reality of the South campus will bring new programs and services for students currently attending area high schools.  It will also benefit adults seeking skills to pursue a college education and a new career.”

Satterfield and Pontikes Construction, Inc., is completing work on seven buildings on the new campus.  Jacobs Facilities, Inc., is the project manager.  The firms of Gensler and PBK are the project architects.

Currently, the project is more than 90 percent complete, according to representatives from Jacobs Facilities, Inc. Three buildings—the Child Development Center, Automotive Technology Building and Fitness Center—underwent an inspection for substantial completion in October. The Protective Services and the Academic and Advanced Technology Center, will be ready for substantial completion inspection this month. The Library and Student Center are scheduled for completion in February.

“Laredo Community College South is expected to open in March 2004 with a selection of community education and workforce development and police academy courses.  A full slate of college credit courses will be offered at the new campus beginning in the fall 2004 semester,” says Francisco Martinez, Dean of Second Campus Planning at LCC.
