LCC hosts Art Jam

The Laredo Community College Art Department hosted students and teachers from local and area high schools during the first annual LCC Art Jam on Tuesday, April 20.  The guests were welcomed at a brief orientation at 9 a.m. in the Guadalupe and Lilia Martinez Fine Arts Center Theater.

LCC Art Department Chairperson Dale Short explained that the LCC Art Jam replaces the annual South Texas High School Art Exhibit.  The event fostered greater awareness on the educational opportunities that await high school students after graduation.

“The mission of this program (Art Jam) is to engage high school students with the college’s art instructors and realize how they can benefit from LCC if they choose to study art as a professional career or a hobby,” said Short.

He added that the teachers of the high school students were also invited to take part in faculty resource information workshops offered by the Regional Service Center and the Texas Art Education Association.   The activity could be considered for continuing education units or professional development growth.

More than 100 students and 10 high school art teachers participated in LCC’s Art Jam.  The workshops were held at the Martinez Fine Arts Center and the LCC Art Building.

Workshops, led by LCC art instructors, were offered in the areas of ceramics, jewelry, printmaking, photography, drawing, sculpture and painting.  The morning session were from 10 to 11:45 a.m.; the afternoon session was from 1 to 2:45 p.m.
